Degrees of Comparison
One of the most important questions in any comparison is: What is the degree of the comparison? Degree refers to how accurate, thorough or complete a comparison is. It determines the level of detail and accuracy that goes into making a comparison. The degree of comparison depends on a variety of factors, such as the purpose for which it’s being made, the type of information available, and how much time can be dedicated to making the comparison.
There are different types of comparisons that can be made. The most common is the direct comparison, where two things are compared side by side. For example, if you were to compare two cars, you would look at their features and decide which one is better.
Another type of comparison is the relative comparison. This is where you compare two things, but only in relation to each other. For example, if you were comparing the size of two cars, you would say that one car is bigger than the other.
The last type of comparison is the superlative comparison. This is where you compare three or more things and decide which one is the best or worst. For example, if you were comparing three cars, you would say that one car is the fastest, another car is the most comfortable, and another car is the cheapest.
The Degrees of Comparison
When we compare two things, we can use different degrees of comparison. The most common are the positive, the comparative, and the superlative.
The positive degree is used when we simply state the quality of something. For example, “That apple is big.” In this instance, we are not comparing the apple to anything else; we are just making a statement about its size.
The comparative degree is used when we compare two things. For example, “This apple is bigger than that one.” In this sentence, we are comparing the size of one apple to another.
The superlative degree is used when we compare more than two things or when we want to emphasize how great a quality is. For example, “This is the biggest apple in the bunch.” Here, we are either comparing this apple to many others or emphasizing its large size.
What are the 3 types of degrees of comparison?
Adjectives के तीन Degrees of comparison होते हैं। ये इस प्रकार है –
1. Positive Degree :
इसमें Adjective अपने Simple quality को express करता है। इसका प्रयोग दो व्यक्तियों/वस्तुओं या व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं के दो सेट (समूह) के बीच comparison (तुलना) करने के लिए किया जाता है। इस degree में adjectives को as ………. as /so……..as के रखा जाता है;
जैसे-
This book is as useful as that.
Alia is no so clever as Ameena.
Mohan is as intelligent as Sohan.
These books are as useful as those.
Khushi and Hanshi are as naughty as Neha and Nupur.
2. Comparative Degree :
इसमें Adjective अपने Higher quality को express करता है। इसका प्रयोग दो व्यक्तियों / वस्तुओं या व्यक्तियों या वस्तुओं के दो सेट के बीत comparison करने के लिए किया जाता है। इससे पता चलता है कि कोई व्यक्ति या वस्तु किसी दूसरे व्यक्ति या वस्तु से certain quality में अच्छा (better) है या (worse) खराब;
जैसे-
Mira is wiser than her sister.
Daisy is more beautiful than her mother.
Sudama is less intelligent than his brother.
Ajay and Vinay are better chess players than Mukual and Sunil.
3. Superlative Degree :
इसमें Adjective अपने Highest quality को express करता है। इसका प्रयोग दो से अधिक के बीच Comparison करने के लिए किया जाता है। इससे पता चलता है कि कोई व्यक्ति या वस्तु certain quality में सबसे अच्छा (best) है या सबसे खराब (worst);
जैसे-
Moti is the dullest of all his brothers. Shikhar Dhawan is the best player in our team. Anshu is the most intelligent of all students in the class.
Some Special Points to Remember
1. Adjectives की तरह ही Adverbs के भी Degrees of Comparison होते हैं,
जैसे-
Postive | Comparative | Superlative |
fast | faster | fastest |
soon | sooner | soonest |
near | nearer | nearest |
loud | louder | loudest |
late | later | latest |
much | more | most |
little | less | least |

far | farther | farthest |
fore | further | furthest |
in | inner | innermost, inmost |
out | outer, utter | utter most, utmost |
up | upper | uppermost, upmost |
3. अनेक Adverbs तथा कुछ Adjectives ऐसे हैं जिनका प्रयोग Comparative या Superlative Degree में नहीं होता है;
जैसे-
here, there, now, then, right, wrong, where, once, circular, round, square etc.
4. Latin से लिए गए कुछ Comparatives ऐसे हैं जिनके Positive या Superlative Degree नहीं होते। इनकी संख्या 12 है और ऐसे words का अंत or से होता है। ये इस प्रकार हैं-
Interior, Exterior, Ulterior, Major, Minor, Inferior, Superior, Prior, Anterior, Posterior, Senior & Junior
इनमें से Interior, Exterior, Ulterior, Major तथा Minor का प्रयोग अब Comparative Meaning के लिए नहीं किया जाता है। इनका प्रयोग अब Positive Adjective के रूप में किया जाता है; जैसे-

5. Former, Latter, Elder, Upper, Inner, Outer, Utter etc. कुछ ऐसे English Comparatives हैं जिनका प्रयोग अब Comparative Meaning के लिए न होकर Positive Adjective की तरह होता है;
जैसे-
